Daniel McMahon - Hobart
4th May 1937 - 7th May 2012
Father Daniel John McMahon, a priest of the Archdiocese of Hobart, died peacefully at St Luke’s Hospital, Launceston, on Monday 7th May with his sister Connie and her family around him, when he died. Dan had been suffering a blood disorder for some time and over the past three or so years it was back and forth to hospital for treatment and in recent times palliative care.
Dan was born in Ulverstone, on Tasmania’s north west coast, on the 4th May 1937, to William and Susan McMahon, with two of his siblings Margaret and William predeceasing him. He entered the Christian Brothers and recently marked 50 years since his first religious profession as a Christian Brother. He later entered the diocesan seminary in Melbourne and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Hobart on the 8th December 1994 by Archbishop Eric D’Arcy. Dan served as a priest in the parishes of Devonport, Bellerieve, Bridgewater-Brighton and a final appointment, as Parish Priest of the West Coast. While living on the west coast of Tasmania Dan continued to raise several hundred budgerigars (a life passion) and presenting some of them for shows around Australia or offering his best as breeding stock. A sometimes strong opinionated man (which at times brought about conflict) he was kind and considerate to those many people he served as a priest here in the Archdiocese.
His funeral will take place on Monday 14th May at Sacred Heart Church, Ulverstone, where he was ordained a priest in 1994, with his burial taking place at the old Ulverstone General Cemetery. His mortal remains will be interred next to the priest who baptised him some 75 years ago, Father Martin Dowling and where his parents and family members are interred. May Dan now rest in peace.
